Walking tour of Armagh City

Discover Armagh City of Seven Hills, Armagh is one of the oldest settlements in Ireland, the Spiritual capital of the island in the midst of the Orchard County. It is a gem of a city surrounded by lush green agricultural land, said to be amongst the richest and fertile ground in Ireland. The landscape abounds with trees, rivers, lakes and farms which can be viewed from the top of many of the hills known as Drumlins. It is a “must do” on any itinerary to Northern Ireland, a city tour that can easily be enjoyed on foot at a leisurely pace. In the city itself you will hear tales of creative people from the past right up to this very day, they have inspired art, literature, architecture, music, dance, sport, and more recently screen production. They are a big hearted population who will truly awaken your senses to the core. To uncover the myths and legends of Ulster, in addition to our walking tour, we recommend you visit Emain Macha located 2km from the city centre, it was the seat of the Royalty of this province, such was its grandeur and strategic importance that it featured in Ptolemy’s 2nd Century map of the world. Due to this reputation St Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland was drawn here in the 5th Century, this was his base in Ireland and he established a monastic school. His legacy remains with two majestic Cathedrals, both bearing his name perched on the city skyline, the old Cathedral on Sally Hill, the new one on Sandy Hill. We call this the Home of St Patrick and celebrate his history in many unique ways over the month of March every year. Many people have admired the notable buildings of Armagh, many of them dating from the 18th Century. Locals and visitors love the more recent engaging and quirky Public Art trail perfected by talented sculptors from this island and beyond. Your personal City Guide will give you an insight into the links of each of them with the heritage of this place. Come and enjoy our stories, savour true hospitality, we can recommend a range of places to enjoy a delicious meal or a glass of locally crafted cider or apple juice, rest assured you will make lasting memories in one of the oldest and friendliest cities in Ireland.
